Students and Free Speech: Law and Controversy - Video

Over the years, student speech and self-expression has taken many forms, including wearing armbands to protest the war in Vietnam, wearing T-shirts with controversial slogans, handing out political literature to fellow students, and holding different types of protest demonstrations to indicate support for or opposition to all sorts of political and social causes.  This webinar will provide an overview of the U.S. Supreme Court and Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals cases that directly address the First Amendment rights of public school students while they are at school or involved in school activities.  It will also provide board members with a general understanding of the legal principles that govern the board’s ability to place limitations on student speech and expression at school.
