The Fair Labor Standards Act (29 U.S.C. §§ 201 through
219) was adopted in 1938 to create more jobs by discouraging employers use of
overtime, to prevent wage exploitation of vulnerable workers and to promote interstate
commerce. It currently sets minimum wage, overtime pay standards for covered
employees, as well as equal pay and child labor standards for all employees. The
Acts requirements are enforced by the Department of Labor, Wage and Hour Division.
