Buncombe County Science Teachers Earn Honors

Buncombe County Schools science teachers and curriculum specialist received high honors last year at the regional, state and national level.

At the combined National Science Teachers/N.C. Science Teachers Association conference, Christine Jones, earth environmental science teacher at Buncombe County Early College, was presented the District Eight High School Outstanding Science Teaching Award. 

Kay McLeod, K-12 science specialist for Buncombe County Schools, was awarded the North Carolina Science Teachers Association’s Distinguished Service Award in Administration/Supervision for exceptional service to science education in North Carolina. 

Teresa Cowan, a sixth-grade science teacher at Owen Middle School when nominated, was the only North Carolina recipient of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. Cowan is now director of Mountain Satellite Office for The Science House at N.C. State University. The award is administered by the National Science Foundation on behalf of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.
