Session topics include the following: 

  • June 23 - Conversations with Your Community
    School communications and media relations are rapidly changing in today's 24/7 world. Are you prepared? Does your communications plan address those needs? Are you making the proper investment in school communications? How are you treated by journalists, business and civic leaders, and the community - and what can you do to change that? Participants will learn tips and tricks to perfect their communication skills with the public and the media in this session led by American School Board Journal Editor-in-Chief Glenn Cook and North Carolina School Public Relations President Stan Alleyne. 
     

  • June 24 - Making Your Voice Heard:  The School Board Members Role in the Legislative Process

    It is important for school board members to interact with their legislative delegation on a regular basis. NCSBA Director of Governmental Relations Leanne Winner will spend the day expounding on key issues affecting education and how to effectively engage your legislative leaders
    . During the session, participants will focus on

    • Current developments in the 2008 session of General Assembly

    • Communicating your message to legislators effectively

    • An analysis of the November elections

    • A look forward to the 2009 session of the General Assembly
       
  • June 25 - Policy Leadership for School Boards: Problems, Choices & Decisions in Public Schools

    School board members and administrators confront a host of policy problems that involve core public values. Public choices involve identifying which values are competing for our attention and understanding the tensions and trade-offs between these competing values. Public decision making involves deciding which value or values should have priority in a given situation and charting a course of action that achieves the best possible balance among these values. The goal of this workshop is to enhance policymakers’ leadership skills in solving policy problems, identifying policy choices, and making good policy decisions.
