SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS SOUGHT
BURKE COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA
The Burke County Board of Education is seeking a superintendent to lead the school system in its continuing pursuit of excellence. Candidates must meet the legal requirements to serve as a superintendent in North Carolina or be qualified to serve under the State Board of Education’s alternative guidelines. A doctorate degree or progress toward a doctorate degree is preferred. Superintendent or assistant superintendent experience is also preferred. Nontraditional candidates will be seriously considered. A successful candidate will be required to live in Burke County. Applications are due by August 3, 2009.
A successful candidate must demonstrate ability and
success in (1) educational leadership;
(2) goal setting and monitoring achievement; (3) fostering community
and/or intergovernmental partnerships; (4) administration and organization of
long-term and short-term planning, budgeting, and personnel and facility
management; (5) strong communication and effective team-building skills; (6)
grant writing and procuring additional funding; (7) building diversity and
involvement in community activities; (8) leadership in maintaining safe school
environments; and (9) planning and funding of school facilities.
Burke County, with Morganton as its seat, is situated
in the section of North Carolina where the rolling hills of the Piedmont blend
with the Blue Ridge Mountains. On the south side of Burke County are the South
Mountains. To the west are the Blue Ridge Mountains. Burke County has a
population of approximately 90,000.
The Burke County Board of Education is a seven-member board that oversees a school system of 30 schools, with approximately 14,000 students in grades pre-K through 12.
