The Kannapolis City Schools (KCS) Board of Education is seeking a superintendent to lead the school system in its continuing pursuit of excellence.  Candidates must meet the legal requirements to serve as a superintendent in North Carolina or be qualified to serve under the State Board of Education’s alternative guidelines.  A doctorate degree or progress toward a doctorate degree is preferred.  Superintendent or assistant superintendent experience is also preferred.  A successful candidate will be required to live in the district.  Applications are due by March 16, 2010.

A successful candidate must demonstrate ability and success in (1) educational leadership; (2) goal setting and monitoring achievement; (3) fostering community and/or intergovernmental partnerships; (4) administration and organization of long-term and short-term planning, budgeting, and personnel and facility management; (5) strong communication and effective team-building skills; (6) grant writing and procuring additional funding; (7) promoting diversity and involvement in community activities; (8) leadership in maintaining safe school environments; and (9) planning and funding of school facilities.

The Kannapolis City Schools’ five-member Board of Education oversees a system of nine schools, serving 5,000 students in grades pre-K through 12, with the smallest class sizes of any school district in the area.  Students in the district consistently outperform the state in overall high school student achievement, with A.L. Brown High School being named one of the top high schools in America each of the past two years by U.S. News & World Report.  The district is proud to have produced a National Educator of the Year, National First-Year Teacher of the Year, NC Principal of the Year, Regional Teacher of the Year, UNC Charlotte’s Most Outstanding Teaching Graduate, and a Rhodes Scholar.  KCS exceeds the state and national percentages of teachers certified by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.

One of the school district’s newest attractions is the Kannapolis Performing Arts Center at A.L. Brown High School, which made its debut in October 2006.  This historic, renovated building provides a modern theatre seating for 1,900, with state of the art technology.  KCS also had the first Cyber Campus in North Carolina, which offers advanced academic courses at the high school and partners with the esteemed North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics in Durham.  The school system has received generous grants of impact funding (more than $4 million) to drive its technology efforts over the past two years.

Located just outside of Charlotte, North Carolina, Kannapolis (pop. 40,000) straddles Cabarrus and Rowan counties.  With its rich history and tradition as the original home of Cannon Mills, Kannapolis is proud of its strong racing legacy as the hometown of Dale Earnhardt.

The area is undergoing an exciting transformation with the development of the North Carolina Research Campus (NCRC), which will provide more than a million square feet of research and development facilities, located on the former site of Cannon Mills.  This cutting edge life sciences hub has strong ties with KCS and gives students and staff exciting opportunities for academic and professional growth.  Eight major universities have research centers on the North Carolina Research Campus.  Also located on this campus is the David H. Murdock Research Institute, which has one of the largest and most advanced scientific equipment collections of its kind anywhere in the world.  The school system is adding a new biotechnology center at A.L. Brown High School to provide additional opportunities for its students to prepare for these new developments.
