SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS SOUGHT

WASHINGTON COUNTY, NC

 

The Washington County Board of Education is seeking a superintendent to lead the school system in its continuing pursuit of excellence.  Candidates must meet the requirements for licensure as a superintendent in North Carolina.  A doctorate degree is preferred, but not required.  A successful candidate will be required to live in Washington County. 

 

Applications are due by June 24, 2009.  The board hopes to make a final decision by the end of August 2009.  The board would prefer candidates to take office no later than October 1, 2009.

 

A candidate must demonstrate ability and success in (1) educational leadership; (2) goal setting and monitoring achievement; (3) fostering community and/or intergovernmental partnerships; (4) administration and organization of long- and short-term planning, budgeting, and personnel and facility management; (5) strong communication and effective team-building skills; (6) visibility and involvement in community activities; and (7) leadership in maintaining safe school environments.

 

Washington County is located in northeastern North Carolina, situated where the Roanoke River flows into the Albemarle Sound.  The county has a population of about 13,000 scattered throughout rural areas and the three incorporated towns of Plymouth, Roper, and Creswell.  The agricultural, forestry, and marine industries comprise the foundation of the area’s economy, but heritage tourism is rapidly increasing in popularity.  Washington County boasts many natural areas including several lakes and Pettigrew State Park where history and recreation merge.  Peace and tranquility are staples of life in Washington County.

 

The Washington County School System is governed by a five-member board of education.  The system includes five schools with approximately 2,000 students in pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade.
