Alamance-Burlington’s Sylvan Elementary held its Sylvan Awards Assemblies on Friday, February 1. Research by Bob Marzano and others verifies the power of recognition to inspire student achievement. The School Improvement Team enhanced Awards Day to build student capacity for “…achieving their goals and dreams with confidence, enthusiasm, and perseverance for future success.” [from the Sylvan Elem. vision] Staff worked to include an area to share 21st Century student work products with families. Learning targets were posted to explain the purpose of the work and student leaders were available to explain the process. Two large monitors and a SmartBoard displayed digital work products. All grade levels from pre-K to fifth grade collaborated on this endeavor.

Students and their families’ faces beamed with pride as they mingled among writing samples, rubrics, artwork, photos, diagrams, and digital products. What a great day for the Sylvan Elementary school community to understand the work we are doing!
