ProStart

Shelly Harper, Swansboro High School’s culinary arts teacher, was recently awarded the 2014 North Carolina ProStart Educator Excellence Award by the North Carolina Hospitality Education Foundation.

Harper will join 47 other top educators in Chicago, Il. for the National Restaurant Associations Educational Foundation’s (NRAEF) Pro Start Educator Excellence Awards May 15 – 17.

NRAEF recognizes an exceptional ProStart educator from every state. The award is given to ProStart teachers who are leaders in their state program and have helped elevate the program and their students within the community.

In their release, NRAEF says this of Harper, “(Her) passion for the industry, education and her students, and her strong work ethic and commitment to the ProStart Program made her a clear choice for the (award).”

Harper has been teaching at Swansboro High School since 1997. She is a National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation Certified Secondary Foodservice Educator.

Eight high schools from around the state, including Swansboro High School, sent students to Durham March 24, to compete in the inaugural N.C. ProStart Invitational. Harper’s team took second place in the Culinary category.
