When Angel Guerrero attended a PTA meeting he noticed that of the 150 people in attendance, only six were men.

Guerrero set out to change that dynamic, creating the Fathers Being Involved group at Brooks. Now, more than 40 men are involved, tutoring and helping at the school.

“Being the breadwinner is not enough,” Guerrero said. “We want more men to be a part of their child’s life and encourage them.”

To encourage more dads, stepdads, grandfathers, uncles and male role models to participate at schools across the county, the Guilford County Council of PTAs, in conjunction with Guilford Parent Academy, will hold its first male summit on Saturday.

The event, “Our Children, Our Future! It Starts with Me,” is from 9 a.m. to noon at Page High School. Guerrero, chairman of male involvement for the Guilford County Council of PTAs, helped initiate the summit and will be master of ceremonies.

The summit also will feature guest speakers Ken Canion, a former contestant on NBC’s “The Biggest Loser” and now a motivational speaker and author; Busta Brown, a WXII (NBC, Channel 12) morning news host; and Eric Hines, the 2013 Guilford County Schools Principal of the Year from The Middle College at N.C. A&T.

The summit is free, and adults and children are invited.

“There is no greater blessing than to be given an opportunity to be part of a movement of male empowerment,” Guerrero said. “Our hope is that each male role model will walk out of the summit empowered to make a difference in the life of a child and their community.”
