The Yadkin County Unit of the Retired School Personnel announced the names of the two Yadkin County high school seniors who received the Fred C. Hobson Scholarships for 2014. They are Elizabeth Byrd from Forbush High School and Austin Madison from Starmount High School.

Byrd plans to attend Western Carolina University to major in English. Madison plans to attend the University of North Carolina at Greensboro to major in music education.

The Yadkin County Unit of the Retired School Personnel set up the Fred Colby Hobson Scholarships in memory of Hobson, a longtime educator in Yadkin County. Hobson became superintendent of Yadkin County Schools in 1939. He served in that capacity until he retired in 1971.

As superintendent, Hobson was concerned that students in Yadkin County have anopportunity to participate in educational programs that would create within them a desire to learn and to give of their best in the communities in which they lived.
