The Montgomery County Board of Education entered a recycling agreement that will keep textiles out of the landfill and earn money for the schools. Bins will be placed at schools to collect clothing, towels, curtains, sheets, rags, shoes, boots, handbags, belts and hats for the purpose of recycling. Bill McLaughlin and George Upton of the company said that the United States generates 13.1 million tons of textile waste every year. Currently, only 15.3 percent of that material is recovered. The remaining 84.7 percent fills our nation’s landfills. Carolina Value Village Textile Repurposing will pay the school system for the material collected in the recycling containers. The revenue could be used to support music programs, arts programs or classroom supplies.
There is zero cost to the school system and the recycling will have a positive impact on the environment.
