A.B. Combs Leadership Elementary School was named the top magnet school in the country by the Magnet Schools of America on Friday at its annual conference.

A.B. Combs is the first magnet to twice win the Dr. Ronald P. Simpson Distinguished Merit Award, named after the national nonprofit group’s founder. The school also won in 2006.

The award comes with a $5,000 prize.

A.B. Combs was among nearly 300 public magnet schools that applied for the merit award. According to a Wake County schools news release, the school uses a leadership model based on the philosophies of Stephen Covey, an educator and author of “The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People.

Covey made the school a household name by featuring it in a later book, “The Leader in Me.”
