North Carolina Supreme Court Chief Justice, Mark Martin, spoke to an honors history class at Asheboro High School Tuesday.

“In a democracy, we are the government and we have to be informed and we have to take informative steps to learn how our government works,” said Martin.

Martin gave students insight into how the justice system works and how judges earn their positions.

“It felt nice meeting him,” said student William Aquino. “He told us a lot about the federal government and the state government, how we appoint our judges and how different it is.”

“I like that he was able to come, even for a short amount of time and talk to us and take time out of his schedule,” said student Meredith Priest. “It’s neat.”

Martin says he is happy to speak to students because it is important to help educate the youth.

“We can have the finest scientific and mathematics instruction in the world, but if our young people do not understand the rights and the responsibilities that are found in our Constitution and our law, we don’t have a great future ahead of us,” said Martin.

Prior to his appointment by Gov. Pat McCrory, Martin served as senior associate justice of the court.
