Loaves and Fishes is reaching out to gardeners, asking that they plant an extra row of produce and donate it to the 19 pantries Loaves and Fishes stocks.

The agency has never turned away anyone who has needed food, but it is in desperate need of produce.  While some churches and civic groups help, Loaves and Fishes is asking individuals to get involved, too.

“The more we thought about it, the more we wanted to help make a difference in our community,” said Hawk Ridge Elementary School fifth grader Ryan Teague.

Teague and students at the south Charlotte elementary school  have been planting and supplying produce to Loaves and Fishes for more than a year.  Now the agency is hoping others will follow.

The agency supplies a week’s worth of groceries to families in need. Half of those Loaves and Fishes serves are children.

“There’s a world of difference in taking home home-grown tomato for your kids to have a tomato sandwich or having a can of tomato sauce,” said Loaves and Fishes’ Beverly Howard.
