
Four Transylvania County students – Sarah Branagan, Crista Cali, Carly Onnink and Abigail Williams – have been chosen to represent North Carolina at an international science and engineering fair after earning Grand Awards at the 2015 NC Science and Engineering Fair (NCSEF) in Raleigh.
The students were among 300 STEM student researchers from across the state who defended their research projects to 120 judges from the STEM community during the NCSEF.
Branagan, Cali, Onnink and Williams were four of 16 students competing in NCSEF’s Senior Division, grades 9-12, who were selected as Grand Award winners and will represent the NCSEF at the INTEL International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in Pittsburg, Pa ., on May 10-15, 2015.
ISEF draws 1,700 students from across the United States, as well as 70 other countries. ISEF is the largest international science competition in the world.
“Our local and regional teachers and fair directors from acrossNorth Carolina continue to raise the standards for student research in all STEM areas,” said NCSEF Director Judy Day. “Our judges continue to share their enthusiasm for the innovation and quality of student work as evidenced in their student interviews.”
